SoulSync City Motion Comics
The final cut of the intro motion comic can be viewed above.
Role: Editor
After our narrative team and 2D artist storyboarded out the comic strips we were planning on using as level transitions for SoulSync City, they passed it off to me to edit together. Above is the final cut of the intro comic for SoulSync City. It's a full motion comic that uses split paneling to fully convey the flow of Mei, the main character, running from building to building and jumping down from up above at the end.
One of the challenges I encountered while working on the motion comics was finding the balance between not enough motion and too much motion. Below is the alpha version of the intro cutscene as well as the beta version. The alpha version (aside from lacking a background and using placeholder audio) lacked any motion at all and felt flat. It didn't grab the viewer's eye at all. The beta version added some movement, but the panning up as Mei falls didn't convey speed and instead made it feel like she was floating slowly down.
I addressed the issue of balancing speed by continually asking for feedback on each cut. For gold master, I went through two further iterations on the intro cutscene until I felt like it was finished. Something I wish I had time for that we passed off to our sound designer was implementing SFX in each comic for stuff like wind rushing and the sound of Mei landing. I'm excited to do so for a future project. The other cutscenes can be found below, including the credits scroll which I'm also particularly proud of specifically because of how the foreground fades to black at the end.
